President's Message - March

From the President - Kathy Jones

Greetings!

We had a great time at the annual awards banquet at the Sam Houston Race Park.  SHRP gave us a suite at no additional charge to host our party.  There were great views of the finish line from the suites level of the main grandstand.    Dinner was excellent.  Many thanks go to Sylvia Workman for organizing such a wonderful event and to Laurie Jackson and her sister, Lynn, for ordering and coordinating the beautiful awards that were given to all of the winners.  Additional thanks go to Jeanette Snow for preparing the dinner agenda and to Sandra Adair for putting together the slide show of award winners.  It has been a couple of years since we have had one and it was really great to see that again.

The night began with Apple Awards, the Bushager Award and the Charlotte Raisbeck Good Sportsmanship Award.  Recipients of the Apple Awards were Karen Lara, Karen Peacock, River Johnson and Patsy Drum.  The Bushager winner was Emee Ermel and the Charlotte Raisbeck Good Sportsmanship Award winner was Jane Holman.  Look for an article in the newsletter about each of these winners.

We had a great turn-out at the Janet Foy seminar at Rice University courtesy of Karen Sannan, the HDS Education Chair.  Approximately 45 people attended her presentation that included insight into the new national tests that are effective in December, advice to the crowd on how to deal with inappropriate comments from judges, and ways to improve your scores at the show.  Look for Susan Howard’s article in this newsletter.  Door prizes included two gift certificates to Charlotte’s Saddlery and a free tack stall at a HDS show this year.

The Spring Classic Show is less than two months away.  This is a large three-day High Performance  qualifier.  Jane Holman, our Volunteer Coordinator, will  be looking for many volunteers to make this show successful.  Please contact her at janeintheneck@aol.com if you are able to volunteer.  The prize list for the show has been posted on the HDS website and on www.showsecretary.com , Susan Peacock’s website.  We have prize money at this show.   Good luck to everyone!

Please feel free to contact me at any time if you have some great ideas for HDS improvement.  Also, if you want to become more involved in HDS, elections to the Board are not that far off.  Positions up for election this year are President, Vice President, Schooling Show Chair; Junior/Young Rider Chair; Sponsorship and Advertising Chair (Ways and Means); Awards Chair; Historian/Recorder and Special Events Chair.
